neuromodulators | wrinkle prevention

Botulinum Toxin
Neuromodulators are substances that affect the physiological processes of neurons in the body. Botulinum Toxin is a type of neuromodulator that prevents the release of a neurotransmitter that is responsible for muscle activity. Therefore the muscle that is injected will be temporarily “paralyzed”. Reducing movement of muscles via neuromodulator injections are an ideal, non-surgical, way to soften frown lines, forehead wrinkles or crows feet to give you a more relaxed and refreshed appearance.

Is it safe for me? Yes - when used in appropriate dosages and by a trained professional. It is commonly used for the lines in between the eyebrows, the forehead, and around the eyes. Although Botulinum Toxin is responsible for a rare illness called botulism, the versions used for injection have been clinically tested and FDA approved since 1989. The most frequently reported side effects are mild and temporary; including but not limited to pinpoint redness, headache, and effects seen in a neighbouring muscle.

myths:

#1 “Your face will be frozen and unnatural” - Your face does not have to be completely frozen or seem unnatural if you do not want it to. With proper dosages and placement of product, subtle movements are still possible and intact.

#2 “Once you start receiving injections you can’t ever stop or else you will have more wrinkles” - Neuromodulators only puts a temporary pause on the worsening of your wrinkles. Once you stop receiving injections, you will still be the same you but with months less of frowning or furrowing. You can choose to stop and start treatments at your own discretion.

#3 “Neuromodulators will reverse my wrinkles” - Although neuromodulators cannot reverse deep wrinkles that have already formed, with proper skin care and continuous treatment, they can be improved and prevented. When done in combination with dermal fillers, laser skin rejuvenation, platelet rich plasma and microneedling, and hydradermabrasion with hydrafacials, formed wrinkles can be dramatically softened.

The decision to have neuromodulator injections is extremely personal, and you’ll have to decide if the benefits of the injections outweigh the risks and potential complications.

You will be asked to sign consent forms to ensure that you fully understand the procedure and any risks. It is important that you address all your questions directly with your surgeon.

procedure

Neuromodulator treatments are typically done in the office in a short 15-minute appointment. A fine needle is used for the injection and discomfort associated with the procedure is generally minimal. The length of your consultation will depend on the amount of questions you may have. You can generally receive treatment on the same day as your consultation.

recovery

Immediately after a neuromodulator treatment, it is possible to experience certain side effects such as redness and sensitivity in the injected area.  These side effects are temporary and will resolve on their own within the hours following the injections.

Neuromodulator injections normally begin to take effect in the 48-72 hours post injection.  The full effect of the treatment will be noticed gradually over two weeks. This is a non-permanent treatment option and results typically last about 3-6 months however, after several treatments the effects of the Botox may begin to last longer.

For four hours after injection, please do not rub or manipulate the skin in the area that was injected, do not lie down or bend your face forward, and do not wear a hat, headband, or any tight head garment. Please do not perform activities involving straining, heavy lifting, or vigorous exercise for 24 hours after treatment to reduce risk of bruising. You can resume all other normal activities immediately following your neuromodulator injections.

It is possible to not obtain a complete result in targeted muscles.  The human face and eyelid region are normally asymmetrical with respect to structural anatomy and function.  There can be a variation from one side to the other in terms of the response to the injections.  Additional injections may be needed to reach the desired level of result can be performed until the goal is achieved.  We would be more than happy to see you again in two weeks for a touch-up.

Should you have any questions and concerns, or if you are experiencing difficulties raising your eyelids, dry eyes, double vision or weakness in non-targeted muscles, please feel free to give us a call at (403) 800-9157 and leave a message as necessary. If you are unable to reach us, and need medical advice please call 811 to speak to a nurse, the line is free of charge and available 24 hours a day.

things to consider

While some patients might think neuromodulators and fillers can only be used separately, they’re actually better when used together. Neuromodulators are often used in conjunction with fillers to enhance the overall results of those treatments to provide the softest and most natural looking improvement in facial appearance and age.

A good candidate for neuromodulator injections is a patient who is relatively healthy and has realistic expectations for post-procedure outcomes.
