It is a fair question, and it has a history behind it. For decades, cosmetic surgery on Asian patients was often described in terms of making features look more Western. That framing is outdated and it is not how we practise. Here is how we think about it, what the common procedures actually involve, and what you should ask any surgeon you consult.

Why does facial anatomy matter in surgical planning?

Faces differ in structure, and those differences are not cosmetic details. They change what a procedure can achieve and how it should be planned.

Compared to a European face, an Asian face more commonly features a flatter nasal bridge and thicker, more sebaceous nasal skin, a fuller midface, a wider and lower nasal base, and an upper eyelid that may have a low crease or no visible crease at all. Skin often carries more melanin, which changes how it responds to lasers and to injury.

None of that is a problem to be corrected. It is anatomy to be planned around. A surgeon who applies the same operation to every face will get an unnatural result on some of them, which is precisely why experience with a particular anatomy matters more than the name of the procedure.

Double eyelid surgery and Asian blepharoplasty

This is the most requested facial procedure among our Asian patients, and it is the one most worth understanding before you book.

Roughly half of people of East Asian descent naturally have an upper eyelid crease, and half do not. Neither is a defect. Double eyelid surgery, sometimes called Asian blepharoplasty, creates or refines that crease. The entire conversation is about height and shape. A crease set too high, or shaped without regard to your existing anatomy, reads as surgical and westernized. A crease set thoughtfully looks like an eyelid you could have been born with. This is why we spend consultation time on what you want your eyes to look like in a photograph, not just on whether to operate.

One caution worth stating plainly. Eyelid surgery interacts with brow position and with dry eye, and both need assessing before anyone operates. If a consultation does not raise them, that is a signal.

Rhinoplasty on an Asian nose

Rhinoplasty for an Asian patient is often a different operation from the one people picture. The classic Western request is reduction, taking a hump down or narrowing a bridge. For many Asian patients the goal involves adding definition and projection to a flatter bridge or refining a wider nasal base instead.

Thicker nasal skin also behaves differently. It hides small refinements and it holds swelling longer, so the final result takes more patience to appear. A surgeon who has worked with that skin type will tell you this before surgery rather than after.

As with the eyelids, the aim is a nose in proportion with your own face. Bring photographs to your consultation. They make the conversation far more precise than adjectives do.

Skin treatment and deeper skin tones

Surgery is only half of what patients come to us for, and skin is where the risk of a poor outcome from the wrong provider is highest.

Skin with more melanin carries a real risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation when a laser is used at the wrong settings, and some clinics manage that risk by declining to treat deeper skin tones at all. Pigmentation is also worth raising before surgery, not only before laser treatment. Skin with more melanin is more prone to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation as an incision heals, so incision placement, closure, and aftercare all deserve discussion at your consultation. Scarring is a risk factor to plan around in every patient, and it is one where skin tone genuinely changes the conversation.
