  • Undesired lip shape or size, including thin or asymmetrical lips
  • Deflated cheeks and hollow temples
  • Under-eye depression and hollowing
  • A receding chin and undefined jawline contour
  • Nasolabial folds, marionette lines, and jowls

Most of these are volume concerns. That is the distinction that decides whether filler is right for you, and it is the first thing we assess.

Dermal Fillers Calgary | Hyaluronic Acid Fillers

Hyaluronic acid fillers, commonly called dermal fillers, restore or add volume to soften lines and rebuild contour in the face.

Hyaluronic acid fillers, commonly called dermal fillers, restore or add volume to soften lines and rebuild contour in the face. At art&fact, a surgeon-led plastic surgery and medical aesthetics clinic in Calgary, Alberta, they are injected by our medical aesthetic injectors with five board-certified plastic surgeons in the building.

Hyaluronic acid occurs naturally in your body, particularly in skin, hair, and nails, where it attracts water and keeps skin hydrated. Higher levels support collagen production, the movement of nutrients between cells, and the healing of damaged skin. The fillers used in treatment are a modified version of the same substance, manufactured in a range of thicknesses and consistencies so the product placed in a lip is not the product used along a jawline.

Used well, the result is subtle and impactful. Filler is not intended to be obvious, and it is not intended to turn your face into a different one.

What to know

Detail What to expect
Downtime Swelling and bruising for 24 to 48 hours
Results Immediate, and typically lasting 6 to 12 months
Pain Mild
Anesthesia Topical numbing cream, with lidocaine in the filler itself
Appointment 30 to 45 minutes, often same day as your consultation

The procedure

Filler treatments are performed in our Marda Loop clinic in a 30 to 45 minute appointment. A fine needle is used and discomfort is generally minimal. Most fillers contain lidocaine, which numbs the area progressively as the injection proceeds. Because the consultation and the treatment can often happen in the same visit, the length of your appointment depends largely on how many questions you have, and we would rather you asked all of them.

Every product used at art&fact is purchased through the official pharmaceutical company that manufactures it. These products have gone through clinical testing and are Health Canada and FDA approved, and they are only available for purchase by licensed and registered medical practitioners.

Recovery and aftercare

In the first 24 to 48 hours you may notice redness, swelling, or tenderness in the treated areas. Most redness and swelling settles within the first day.

After lip treatment, swelling is normal and improves over about a week, during which lips may look uneven. To reduce swelling and redness, use ice in 15 minute intervals every one to two hours until symptoms subside.

  • Avoid touching the treated area for four hours, then clean gently and apply light makeup if needed
  • If you bruise, use warm compresses after the first 24 hours
  • Small lumps under the skin for about a week are normal and can be gently massaged
  • Alcohol and medications that thin the blood make bruising more likely

Results are not always exactly right the first time. Correction can be slightly under or over what you wanted, and the two sides of a face rarely respond identically. Additional product can be added until the result is where you want it, and we are happy to see you again two weeks later for a touch-up.

When to call us

Call art&fact at (403) 800-9157 and leave a message if needed should you notice any skin discolouration such as marbling, paleness, severe redness or darkening that is not ordinary bruising, or severe pain in a treated area. If you cannot reach us and need medical advice, Health Link Alberta at 811 is free and available 24 hours a day.

In the hands of a trained health professional, the major complications of filler injection can be safely treated when they are addressed promptly. That is the reason we ask you to call early rather than wait.

things to consider

Fillers, neuromodulators, and knowing which you need

Fillers and neuromodulators are both injectables, and they are often confused. Neuromodulators relax the muscles responsible for movement lines. Fillers fill creases and restore volume. They are frequently used together, and the combination is often what produces the softest and most natural improvement.

Filler is also not the answer to every concern, and we would rather tell you that at consultation than afterward:

If your concern is The treatment is more likely to be
Lost volume, contour, or lip shape Hyaluronic acid fillers
Movement lines from muscle activity Neuromodulators
Skin texture, tone, and quality Laser resurfacing , microneedling with PRP , or a HydraFacial
Significant excess and loose skin Surgery, such as a facelift
Lasting structural change to the nose Rhinoplasty rather than liquid rhinoplasty

Filler is a temporary treatment for facial aging that works by restoring lost volume. As a face continues to age, skin quality and texture need attention too, and for some patients with significant excess and loose skin, surgery is required to get the result they actually want. Filler can then be used as maintenance afterward.

Why have fillers at a surgeon-led clinic

art&fact offers the most comprehensive options in Calgary across surgical and non-surgical care, and for injectables that matters in two practical ways.

The first is judgement. When a clinic offers only injectables, every problem tends to look like one that injectables can solve. We can tell you when the honest answer is a different treatment, or a combination, or nothing yet.

The second is what stands behind the treatment. Injections are performed by our medical aesthetic injectors within a practice that has five board-certified plastic surgeons on site. Facial anatomy varies from patient to patient, and complication management is a clinical skill rather than an afterthought. You can meet the team on our About Us page.

A good candidate for fillers is a patient who is relatively healthy and has realistic expectations for the outcome. The decision to have filler injections is a personal one, and you will be asked to sign consent forms confirming you understand the procedure and its risks. Ask your surgeon or injector every question you have before you sign.

Frequently asked questions

How long do dermal fillers last?

Results are visible immediately and typically last 6 to 12 months. Duration depends on the product, the area treated, how much that area moves, and your own metabolism. Lips tend to be at the shorter end of that range.

Do dermal fillers hurt?

Discomfort is mild. A topical numbing cream is applied first, a fine needle is used, and the lidocaine within most fillers numbs the area as treatment proceeds.

Can hyaluronic acid fillers be dissolved?

Yes. Hyaluronic acid fillers can be broken down with an enzyme injection if a result needs adjusting, which is one of the practical advantages of hyaluronic acid over other filler materials.

What is liquid rhinoplasty?

Liquid rhinoplasty uses filler to improve the shape and contour of the nose without surgery, starting at $1,200. It suits some concerns well and others not at all, and where surgery is the better answer we will point you to rhinoplasty instead.

Can I have fillers and neuromodulators at the same appointment?

Often, yes. Many treatment plans combine them, and your injector will advise on sequencing based on the areas being treated.

How soon can I go back to normal activities?

Most patients return to their day immediately. Plan around the first 24 to 48 hours if you bruise easily or have an event coming up.
